Our cold front has rolled through the area with a nice rain. Severe storms stayed well north & west of Jax & no severe weather occurred on the First Coast.
As for this week, the weather highlights are:
-- Cool through Wed. with quite a bit of inland light frost early Wed. morning
-- Warming trend begins Wed. afternoon through Thu. & really kicks in Fri.-Sat.
-- Onshore winds could bring a coastal shower or two Thu.
-- The next significant storm system will be an area of low pressure that moves across the Tennessee Valley Fri. into Sat. This system brings a few showers to the area Fri. with better rainfall Fri. night into Sat. Timing of this system is still a little bit up in the air, but it does look like we'll have a nice Sun. at least.
As expected, another severe storm outbreak over the weekend with a number of confirmed tornadoes from Texas to Georgia. The worst twisters struck Sun. in parts of Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia & the Fl. Panhandle. At least 1 EF-3 tornado struck not too far from Montgomery, AL injuring 50. N.W.S. offices are still in the midst of their storm surveys but the Birmingham office has posted a preliminary report.
NOAA has completed their summary of Jan. for the U.S. & found temps. & precip. to be near avg. There were some extremes, however, including a mild Northeast, a cold West, dry in the Plains & quite wet in the West. We also had several intense severe storm/tornado outbreaks during the month. Overall, about what one would expect during a moderate to strong La Nina.
